After almost two years of hype, the debut EP by Komplot finally arrives. The question is, is it worth the wait? I’m happy to report that it definitely is, with only the title track being the weak link amongst the four songs on the EP. It also contains some real impressive knob-twiddling by the band’s guitarist, with my only complaint being the drum sound, which could’ve been tougher. Komplot Band

Komplot released their first single in 2007 which was aptly called ‘Konflik Metropolis’. It became the rave of the town and about. It all soon became clear as Komplot returns the compliment that the local independent scene had. Komplot bared it all on their first ever show at Laundry Bar, when literally hundreds if not thousands came to the modish bar to gratify their curiosity as to what the hype about Komplot is all about. The show exploded with broken furniture flew about, massive dance-pit encircled, and significantly those who came were enthused and this started the craze called Komplot. From then on, it was apparent that Komplot is a band to pass on for and the songs to live by.

Flash forward to 2008, as Komplot grew more established, it was inevitable that Komplot had to release a brand new recording following the hugely successful single, ‘Konflik Metropolis’. This was said to be a mini album cum EP also some sort of a teaser for an upcoming full length album. That’s right. A full length album is in the works as we speak. However, the public whom now had become all too familiar with Komplot, pressed for a lengthier recording. Yet, Komplot understood a release can only be released when it is supposed to be released no matter how great the urgency. The songs in the EP had to go through rigorous regime in terms of re-phrasing, re-mixing and unorthodoxly re-recorded. This was done however to justify the hype and the demand that the public has pressed upon Komplot.

Komplot transcends all when it comes to critics and admirers alike. Both acknowledge the energy that Komplot gives a free rein to and the public would remain vigilant as to how Komplot would progress. And indeed, this is how Komplot relishes the challenge under adversity with their eclectic mix of band members. Eclectic in the sense of confluence, achievement and confidence. Zac, a regular player in the circuit, hits the melodies with such ease and commandeering while maintaining stage zest ness and authority. While Jeff ‘the whore’, is the ‘in-demand’ saxophonist at the moment and he calls himself home in Komplot. He cites Micheal Brecker and Hello Kitty as primary influences. However, the centre of gravity which makes sense to all of it all is the guitarist cum the chief songwriter. He calls himself Amrud. We call him the prodigious guitarist who brings to the band hope, desire, motivation and lastly, monies. Not many à la mode riffs can be churned out of a Godin. Yet he manages to do it with bravado, every time. Yup, every time.

The band’s structure would be complete with the introduction of Komplot’s groove section comprising Chino and Haekal. The latter is the bassist. Walking down Komplot’s groove section, one would reminisce the good moment when funk is all boorish and uncouth. The groove section stand by the tryst that embraces the roots of groove and the energy which seemed to have lost it all in translation. Yet, what path do men take? As fame is death’s little sister, isn’t it all too corny that men should partake a path that conjoins passion and contentment instead of gluttony and sheer pompousness. Komplot firmly believes in the spirit of musicianship and the freedom that comes with it. Hence, Komplot embraces the D.I.Y and the independent spirit while being realistic and pragmatic to the reality of the local music industry. Komplot hopes to shatter the mental hurdle that independent acts should suck and be pain in the asses. Komplot believes in the thriving of the independent scene and would strive hard to go beyond the localized genre ship and ultimately to penetrate the persistent and conservative listeners.

December 2008, Komplot released their first ever EP titled as ‘Disko Tanpa Risiko’. The five-tet which hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia released four new songs in the new EP. This EP has been the work of progress for the band members since middle last year. This tireless effort will surely satisfy the folks who had been anticipating the new recording and ultimately to get to know and experience what Komplot is all about.

How it began

In the first quarter of the year 2002, the Ministry of Youth and Culture of Malaysia sent representatives to Kyrgyzstan as Ambassadors for the World Music festival held there. The event saw the participation of 40 countries, including Sweden, Africa, Palestine, Germany, Russia, Uzbekistan and the United States of America.

From the Malaysian contingent, two young musicians became acquainted through a common love for music from the Rock genre a bond that holds strong to this very day.

The guitarist Rithan was selected after a series of shortlists, particularly for his contribution to the local music scene. Ainol was an obvious choice. 16 years old at the time, he had already carved a reputation for himself as a sterling drummer and percussionist.

Seeing as how the Festival was a showcase of World Music, Rithan and Ainol performed traditional Malaysian masterpieces such as the Ulik Mayang, Joget Pahang and Jong Jong Inai together with the troupe. Rithan also conducted talks and workshops covering the theory, harmony and rhythm approaches to Malaysian music from a historical perspective.

During the month-long Festival, Rithan and Ainol discovered that they shared similar influences in their individual style, as well as an insatiable love for precision-based Rock music.

Cue three weeks after the World Music Festival. Back in the sunny shores of Malaysia, Ainol contacted Rithan in the hopes that the talented guitarist would be willing to form a band together to take part in Asian Beat, a prestigious battle-of-the-bands competition that spanned the region. Rithan first declined, seeing as how he had only just begun pursuing his degree in Music. A hundred telephone calls later, Rithan finally gave in to Ainols determination and thus, the earliest incarnation of Deja Voodoo Spells was born.

Shows

Asian Beat 2003

After strenuous rehearsals and recruiting of bandmates, the band played their hearts out at the competition and bagged the titles for Best Guitarist Asian Beat 2003, Best Keyboardist, Best Drummer and the Most Promising Band 2003 award from ROTTW, the premier Rock music magazine in the country.

Recognising their own potential, Rithan and Ainol decided that this would be their career path and made a pact. The terms were simple: make good Rock music and transcend the existing levels of musicianship.

Early shows

It wasnt just the band that believed in themselves. The Malaysian Media from local press, magazines and radio stations helped push the band and gave them the exposure they were due.

Obviously, the band hit the underground gig circuit and took their original compositions on the road. Playing alongside other independent bands in front of varying audiences gave them the necessary experience as showmen and performers. Deja Voodoo Spells garnered a reputation as a versatile, no-frills, hard-hitting Rock band.

To paraphrase one of the greatest Rock bands in History it is indeed a long way to the top if you want to Rock & Roll. The band found it difficult to appeal to the MTV/Top 40 audiences of Malaysia who were used to more radio-friendly tunes. However, the band made the hard push and ventured on as a three-piece band that would not stop until the audience was all rocked out.

Niche

The bands first big official gig was playing in a club called Niche alongside heavyweights like Zahid Ahmad and Steve Thornton. Interestingly, Niche was a Jazz club, but the band wowed the audience with their skill and showmanship. Deja Voodoo Spells was the first Rock band to play the Jazz scene and paved the way for other Rock bands to break into the Jazz market. This was also partly because most Rock music enthusiasts didnt quite get the music of Deja Voodoo Spells back then, while Jazz lovers could appreciate the intricacy of their compositions.

However, the non-believers had another thing coming. Nobody expected Deja Voodoo Spells a Rock band playing to Jazz audiences, to turn a bare venue into a full-house within a week. From playing empty Monday nights for 5 Ringgit per entrance, the band brought in enough people with their music to move on to jam-packed Friday and Saturday night shows. The response of the audiences were tremendous, and it was then that the dream to record a debut album was first planted in Rithan and Ainols hearts.

After about two months of playing the Jazz Club and various underground gigs, Deja Voodoo Spells supporters steadily grew in numbers.

The Ibanez Guitar Clinic Feature

In 2004, the band was invited to conduct the first ever Ibanez Guitar Clinic Feature in Malaysia. The one-day event to promote Ibanez guitars, amplification and stomp boxes was a huge success which saw the band performing to a crowd of over a hundred people in a venue with a seating capacity of only 40. The clinic was also what pushed Rithan to be unofficially known as that Ibanez guy. Ainols drum kit of choice was the TAMA Star Classic, which he still uses till this very day to the best of his abilities.

With his newly-acquired standing as the Ibanez Man of Malaysia, Rithan was invited to be featured in a calendar printed by Bentley Music as the representative for Ibanez products. During this same time, Ainol was quickly rising through the ranks of professional drummers as a prodigious child playing amongst bigwigs.

Planet Hollywood & Hard Rock

Slowly but surely, Deja Voodoo Spells progressed from the underground scene to playing bigger venues like Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Café. It became increasingly difficult to ignore the band and their talent. More and more people began to understand Deja Voodoo Spells music and could feel their continuous struggle to be heard and accepted.

Search

The bands big break as true-blue rockers came when they were asked to open for Search, arguably Malaysias most prominent rock band with over 2.1 million copies sold throughout their 20-odd-year career. The stadium concert introduced Deja Voodoo Spells to the largest audience the band ever played to and the response they received was nothing short of spectacular.

The mark they left on that stage was so big it became ingrained in the hearts of Rock fans nationwide. The foundation that theyve been building all those years was finally solid enough for them to stand up on, and there wasnt a self-respecting rock fan that wasnt anxiously waiting for Deja Voodoo Spells debut album.

Not one to pass up on a hot story, the Malaysian Media once again gave Deja Voodoo Spells coverage and exposure. Whether it was appearances on TV, radio or write-ups in magazines, here was a band that had no album, yet still guaranteed packed venues while performing original compositions.

The Launch

The album I Am What I Am was launched unofficially in November 2005. With hardly any advertising or promotion work, the album sold out its first printing run of 2000 copies in two weeks. Relying completely on word-of-mouth and the reputation the band garnered through heavy gigging, the bands CD sales testify to their popularity, especially since local album sales in Malaysia is extremely poor, particularly for new bands.

The album was officially launched on 26 January 2006 under @19 Records along with the bands conceptual Book of Spells - a Rock Play featuring a strings section, visual elements as well as theatre actors and dancers.

The official launch received mass media coverage; the biggest the band has ever been part of.

To date, I Am What I Am has sold more than 3000 copies, which is an achievement many mainstream artistes with big-budget production and promotion cant lay claim to.

Deja Voodoo Spells single, I am what I am has been number one in two radio stations in Malaysia.

Recently, the band received two nominations in the AIM awards, Malaysias equivalent to the Grammys.

The Name
What is the story behind the name of Black Territory? Well to us is just a reflection of people that do not want to acknowledge that we are in fact living in Black Territory. We allowed ourselves to sink deep in our own creation of hell. Murders, rapes and crimes have become routines and we are reading it everyday in the newspapers headlines like it was nothing to us. A society that we living in is not safe anymore. We are ignoring our darkest inner self reflections but we still confess we live in a bright side yet we ignored people whom are living in the dark side of society. What differs between us and them? Just a boundary?

History
Surprisingly it all started few years back when group of young guys who had passion in music decided to combine their talent and ideas to form a band. A band that reflects the true inner self and things that molded them into they are now.
The band started as a project band in July 2006 with Ayed, Man, Bob and Wan as participant in Myso Jam Fest (Battle of The Band Tribute to Red Hot Chilli Peppers) that was held at The Curve. The lineup stood up as band and called them as Black Territory. But since that day the band was left passive and only appears in few battles of the bands that were held around Kuala Lumpur. This band remains as project band those times because each of the line up was busy with their own band as Ayed and Bob is from Raizhobium, Man was ex frontman of Naratu and Wan was from Liprosys and Valountry. In the same year of 2006, the band acted as a participant band in Road To Soundstage 2006 and surprisingly we end up as second places amongst 70 bands that participated too in the event. During this time, Apit (guitarist) and Degop of The Falling Grudge (vocalist) were added to the lineup with absence of Man that was sick during the battle. Since that day the band officially made up of six young lads. In middle of year 2008, Wan (Drummer) was replaced by new drummer from Raizhobium that known as Kadok and Degop withdraw due to commitment matters.

There Music
Black Territory is known as a band that more to melodic metal with few big names in specific genre has become our biggest influences such as In Flames, As I Lay Dying, Arch Enemy and Killswitch Engage as our music is basically revolved around melodic and melancholy riffing with angst vocals in growling and shrieking collaborating each other provided with brutal hard style of drumming. But the bottom of it, Black Territory is known as its own entity as the same common the lineup share is in passions towards music. Although each single of the lineup in Black Territory has its own preferences in genre but the passions they share do help Black Territory in cooperating each other and helping the band realizing their dreams. This has developed a mobile bond between the band and growing stronger each by day. Black Territory has appeared in few gigs and shows around Malaysia's Peninsular (as stated in the past events) and the band have participated too in Global Battle of The Band that was held at 18 Club. Black Territory is now in a process of improving each day since practice and getting tighter is the main objective. Throughout these years, Black Territory has shared stages with international bands such as PARKWAY DRIVE (Australia), MOTIVATION (Hungry), CARPHATIAN (Australia), CONDEMNED (USA), MISERY SIGNALS (USA), HEREAFTER (Australia) and GRACE IS GONE (Australia). Not only that, Black Territory had shared stages with few regional bands (just name few) such as Siksakubur, BurgerKill, Straight Answer, Jasad, Panic Disorder, Paper Gangster, Hatestroke, Killing Me Inside, Beauty Kill The Beast, Blooded Suicide, Thirteen, Sweet As Revenge, Burning Flame - (Indonesia), Ragdoll Epilogue, Murdered For Revenge, Every Rage I Seek and For Better Endings - (Singapore), Heirdom From Heaven - (Thailand) and with few local bands that not only came from metal genre but as well as other genres too such as Y2K, Bittersweet, Meet Uncle Hussein, Restraint, Cassandra, Love Me Butch, The Otherside Orchestra, Langsuyr, Revenge, Hayagriva, Infectious Maggots, Hujan, Bunkface, Seven Collar T-Shirt, Negation, Project AK, Blind Tribe, Republic of Brickfields, Asthalin and few other local acts that too many to be listed. What really defines us? Only God knows!

It started in the early 2008. NABIL, Song cum lyric writer and experimental music junkie thought of forming a music band that could sweep off anyone’s feet just by listening to its song for the first time. But in order to achieve this he will need manpower or minions.. or in the music industry we call it bandmates. Therefore he embarked on a few months journey to the hyperspace (youngsters called it MySpace. Don’t know and don’t care) to find any potential sycophant. TATYANA was browsing carelessly like a deer jumping around aimlessly and was unaware of any entities stalking her profile, NABIL(will be known as the hunter hereafter). Without hesitation the hunter pressed the ‘add to friends’ button on his spaceship called FTec.

TATYANA , an alternative music addict and very well experienced in singing joined forces together with APIT, garage+indie music buff and very active in song and lyric writing for his comrades. Their meeting with ‘the hunter’ triggered some ideas and opinions and later they realised that, “hey we got chemistry!”. Together they worked hard to form a formula that none of you geeks can find in any mathematic textbooks.

‘Bicara’ or known in English as ‘conversation’ was aeons ago created by the hunter as a secret weapon. It just that the hunter believes that Bicara is like a wine, the longer u keep it, the more precious it will become. This song is the first one to be re-arranged by ‘Selamat Pagi Gadis’ or in English, Good Morning ma Lady. (Yes people, our band do have a name)

ZIZIE, an old friend of the hunter who was so into the local and international music scene and previously from a local institute of orchestra as a drummer, was later introduced to the victims; TATYANA and APIT at that time was humanly trafficked online. After negotiating for awhile, he agreed to join Good Morning ma Lady wholeheartedly and some said he was in tears.

The hunter returned to his hometown and Good Morning ma Lady then grew without a permanent bassist. Syed Ali, (standing ovation) a good friend of the hunter while in Glasgow was summoned from the shadow to help nurture Good Morning ma Lady. Syed Ali @ Alejandro put the rest of them in awe (yes literally, they went “awwwwwww!”) after nailing the bassline with a crappy semi functioned 5-string bass rented from the studio. Bermula sekitar tahun 1997..dianggotai oleh Sid(vokal), Ijoy(Vokal/Gitar), Sol(Bass) dan Lim(Drum) dimana ketika itu dikenali sebagai HazardToyz yang berkonsepkan 70's Brit Punk Rock. Sering membuat persembahan di gig-gig sekitar P.Pinang, Melaka dan Johor. Namun, hasrat untuk meneruskan perjuangan seni tersekat setelah Sid dan Sol mengambil keputusan untuk mengundurkan diri atas sebab peribadi pada tahun 2000.

Ijoy dan Lim masih lagi aktif dalam scene underground dengan menjadi sessionist kepada Stuck 13 dan Jump Kids. Penglibatan mereka juga tidak lama setelah mereka mengambil keputusan berehat seketika untuk melanjutkan pelajaran. Atas minat yang mendalam di bidang seni hiburan, Ijoy dan Lim bersepakat untuk menubuhkan sebuah band yang berbeza konsep dari HazardToyz. Dengan itu lahirlah NOTA MUZIKA.....

NOTA MUZIKA ditubuhkan pada Disember 2008, berkonsepkan lagu yang berentak POP, ROCK dan RETRO. Di anggotai oleh 5 jejaka dan seorang wanita, iaitu:

Sejak penubuhan band ini,NOTA MUZIKA telah melibatkan diri dalam event-event yang dianjurkan oleh 'ker@boo' dan pernah menjadi host dalam sesi ke-30 bertemakan 'Valentine Day Special',membawakan 10 buah lagu dalam sesi yang berlangsung selama 3 jam.

NOTA MUZIKA juga pernah membuat persembahan di Cantumas Travel Cafe,Setiawangsa anjuran 'Seattlewangsa Music Scene'.Selain itu, NOTA MUZIKA juga telah diberi peluang untuk membuat persembahan di Fresh Tune,Bukit Jalil, anjuran Bandit Community bersama Kementerian Belia & Sukan Malaysia,begitu juga di Studio Cafe, Wangsa Maju ( milik Zahid AF ). Bukan sahaja di Kuala Lumpur, malah di NOTA MUZIKA sudah sampai ke Melaka dalam persembahan akustik anjuran Bandit Community dan Uptown Melaka.

Setakat ini NOTA MUZIKA masih lagi mencari peluang untuk mengembangkan bakat serta pengalaman dalam seni hiburan tanahair juga berharap agar dapat membuat persembahan di seluruh Malaysia.

Originated from Banting, I KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND (IKYB) was established in the year 2007 by four young guys.They are Enol as vocalist, Fix as guitarist, Alan on bass and Tompel on drum position.

IKYB's first single entitled 'the night will never stay' was compilted in the Transformasi Gelombang videography by Banting Music Community.

The hidden and dramatic meaning in the name 'I Kill Your Boyfriend' contributes in the creations of our songs which is much associated to frustation, revenge, sad and anger.

We are basically inspired by band such as Motionless In White, Bless The Fall, Taking Back Sunday, A Skylit Drive, Walls Of Jericho, Silverstein, The Used, Alesana and etc.

We just recorded six songs for our first ep and will be released in the 2009. Those songs are Never Ending Misery, I Should've to Kill You but Not to Kiss you, You Can Only Disappoint Me, The Best Nightmare I've Ever Had, Konspirasi Kehancuran, and Laungan Senja (cover song from Suzsbriea)

From the sleepy Malaysian town of Banting comes Diary, a five-piece act with a rather peculiar approach to indie rock. The gal-fronted band appears to be well-informed about the genre’s many facets, and on their debut EP they explore those facets, be it The Jesus and Mary Chain-type psychedelia of opener ‘Berita Dunia’ or the muted indie pop of the title track. But then, like clockwork, those hipster slants are dropkicked out of contention by mid-song guitar shred fests. It’s pretty funny actually, except you get the feeling that comic relief isn’t meant to be part of the agenda.

We’ve heard much about scores of bands coming out of fertile music grounds such as Ipoh, Johor and of course KL, but rarely do we hear of bands spilling out of the rice and sugar-producing state of Perlis.

But yet, Perlis-based band O-Two is testimony that there are indeed amps blaring and cymbals crashing in Perlis, “Well, truth is, there are actually many bands/musicians in Perlis but many of them are just not willing to track to faraway places like KL to promote their music,” says guitarist/vocalist Alan. “But we’ve proven that if you are willing to, you can make it work.”

While KL bands can leverage off a relatively more extensive gig network or even the budding private college circuit to get their bands going, the much-less slower music scene in Perlis offers many more challenges in terms of getting a band up and running, “It’s certainly very different from starting a band in, say, KL where there are more avenues to promote your band. That’s the main difference. But we’ve gotten quite used to the travelling and it’s never crossed our minds that this is all a little troublesome,” says Alan. “This is because music is our calling.”

The internet age has shrunk the world relatively for bands all around the world with the advent of sites such as MySpace and AMP, but why not still pack up the O-Two machine and replant it somewhere more musically vibrant such as KL? “It’s difficult for us to move to KL because some of us possess businesses based in Perlis. But we do travel to KL quite a bit (our manager is based there) and we’ve never turned down an interview even if it is held in KL,” adds Alan.

Essentially a duo rounded out by drummer Anep and live musicians One (guitars) and Zuber (bass), O-Two plies a sound that shuffles between the Brit prog-centric rock that Muse so ably produces as well as yummy bouts of Indon pop rock artistry. It’s a sound that alienates neither the modern day rocker nor the classic lovers who love a little complexity in their music. Their new album Utusan Rasmi drops around March and from the strength of the tracks that shuffle effortlessly between big riffing prog rock and gentle pop balladry, the album promises to appease.

With O-Two handling the distribution of the new album independently (their previous album Radio Tanah Melayu was distributed/promoted by Universal Music), the journey to get the new album out there promises to be thorny and bumpy, but the band prefers to see things a little more rose-tinted, “If you do it independently, you have rights to your own songs and you have the artistic freedom to take your music where you want it to. We’ve heard many stories of bands being promised things that were not fulfilled and being cheated because they did not understand the terms of the contract. We’re just glad we are able to avoid all that.”

formerly known as parallel lines, and then tenterhooks, lightcraft comprises of 5 very decent-looking/living lads who, under different circumstances, met and decided to form a band. They make melancholic, catchy indie tunes that are mostly influenced by british indie bands (and some non-brit indie bands as well). They released an EP during the tail-end of 2006, The Modern Seasons, and now, they have just released their debut album, Losing Northern Lights, which consists of 10 deliciously melancholic songs. Losing Northern Lights
(A Glorious Day)

Lightcraft’s penchant for opulent pop rock has always been suggested ever since 2006’s patchy but promising Modern Seasons EP. Alas, Losing Northern Lights doesn’t quite deliver on that promise. It is woefully entrenched in all of the genre’s dull humdrum from the Keane-aping ‘The Girl Who Went To War’ to the “Shiver”-lite ‘Those Beautiful Shapes’. Meanwhile, frontman Imam’s vocals lack the necessary textures to launch these existential musings into starry-eyed stratospheres. It is not until the glistening dream pop closer ‘All In My Mind’ that these limitations actually work to good effect. Looks like the stars sleep alone tonight.

ABOUT LOVESICK AVENUE

Shah Alam's very own indie pop rock, Lovesick Avenue was formed by Khairi Anuar and Akram way back in 2003 which later came Khairulfatin, Adzlan, Aizzat and Afie.

Trying to get a mixture on various types of genre. Composing a few songs with the help of Faisal (EAP), the band were called up for the first time ever on stage at the Bersuka Ria PART 5.

Since the first appearance, the band were booked to play at various vanue and events across the peninsular such as Kuala Lumpur, Jerantut Pahang, Taiping Perak, Johore Bharu and along with big names in the local independent scene.

As days goes by, performing at Crossborders laundry bar was a big hit for the band. Yet their biggest achievement so far is to perform with Nokia 5800 Launch Road show.

Now Lovesick Avenue aims to be an icon for Malaysian Indie Rock across borders connecting with Singaporean and Indonesian independent music scene. Spreading their love and passion through music, Lovesick Avenue hopes to catch every ears attention with their mellow heart songs.

“We started playing music because of the ‘Boo Hoo Clapping Song’,” says Khairi Anuar, guitarist for Lovesick Avenue, the latest indie pop sensation to come out of the rustic, largely industrial landscape of Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia.

For those not familiar with the bastions of Malaysian underground music, the aforementioned song is the trademark cut from now legendary Malaysian punk pioneers Carburetor Dung. “We are largely influenced by local underground bands back in the 90s,” adds Khairi. Not unheard of though it might be (Bodysurf bands from Ipoh like Free Love and Harmacy literally make a musical living out of the tail-end of 90s alternative rock bands), it’s perhaps refreshing to see a band that’s not so urgently mindful of being a hip magnet.

In many ways, Nawwar Shukriah (vocals), Akram Jamil (guitars), Mohd Nasrul (bass), Faisal PAE (drums), Khairul Fatin (keys) and Khairi’s journey together has been a long and retrospective one–one that has taken them from the playgrounds to where they are today as UiTM degree students and employees in the working world (one of them is an engineer). “We shared the same interests and passions such as our love for music and teh ais (Malaysian milk tea),” adds Khairi. “The idea to start a band came much later.”

But as a musical unit, Lovesick Avenue appears to display less of a cohesive mindset. Not that it is a detrimental thing, of course. In fact, it provides a fresh musical insight into the increasingly predictable indie music scene. The two cuts released by the band officially so far do have fairly contrasting properties. ‘Purple Bracelet’, the earlier cut from the band, sees them in full 90s flight with dirty guitars, lazy drumbeats and Nawwar in full Tanya Donelly sneer mode. But the latest cut released by the band, ‘Euphony 2009’, sees them updating their sound somewhat, merging 90s indie melodic sensibilities with a driving disco beat and midi-blipping synth lines. Even Nawwar’s lost some of the earlier sneer, replaced by a confident sheen that’s very radio-friendly. Perhaps that’s what makes the band special: their ability to merge constituencies from two fairly contrasting periods of music to call it their own. Or maybe it’s their incessant need to sing heartbreak songs, perhaps an overenthusiastic tribute to their name. “Chicks dig heartbreak songs,” notes Khairi coyly.

Being fairly new kids on the indie block can be a wondrous thing. No burdening need to conform to expectations, no politics; just brazen rock ‘n’ roll and big dreams, with one of them being asked to score a film too. “A Yasmin Ahmad film, of course, because we love her work,” says Khairi without hesitation before offering a typically Lovesick Avenue-like contrast by adding, “Or a teen movie too.” Ah, the beauty of youthful enthusiasm.

KL band Telephony Delivery delivers an album that’s Part post rock and part metal, and an album that puts the band on the map of bands to watch out for. Like their band name suggests, the first song in this album, “All Was Lost’ (which is also the only song with vocals in the entire album), radiates a far out vibe like it’s coming from space. Other songs show potential and the band manages to give a different spin from the usual post-rock output by roping in a DJ. While the album could do much better with a clearer direction, living in vivified enclosures serves as an introduction to the band, and what they are capable of in the near future once they figure out their direction.

Local indie folklore states that at some point in the early 2000s, there came a band called Man Under Zero Effort that swept the Malaysian scene up in a tide of proto-progressive (politically correct term for “complicated as heck”) hardcore and it was all good. The buzz was hot and people all over the scene started talking about the band, and as is the case with most things around here, they started shortening the name and before we could say “Matt Bellamy”, the band’s name had been snipped to MUZE, “We wanted the name Muse, but then we found out that the name was taken. Atoq (guitarist) had an idea to keep the name fairly similar, but flesh each letter out into Man Under Zero Effort,” says Alang, prankster/drummer. “We wanted to make it quite an effort for people to call us by our full name.”

Alang, in person, is a royal jester of the highest order, a fact hardly noticeable when watching him ferociously attacking the drums with madness and lack-of-abandonment. The band, rounded out by Aki (guitars) and Dedek (bass), display both a keen finesse in the more technical aspect of music playing as well as the more extreme, guttural end of the music spectrum, making MUZE’s music both sonically cacophonous as well as visually arresting. “Our music has always been fairly progressive in the way we structure our parts, but we do try to incorporate elements of stoner/psychedelic rock-riffing as well. The idea is to make the music intense. Although in recent times, we’ve also learnt to embrace the more minimal aspects of music as well,” says Alang, who counts Mars Volta and Jaga Jazzist as some of his major influences.

With the emphasis placed squarely on the feet of gear-loving, stomp-boxing post-rockers in recent years, the multifarious effort in dynamism by MUZE appeared rather misplaced–a fact not left unnoted by the band themselves; it wasn’t a sound that the members were prepared to tweak even slightly. But the recent meteoric rise of groove-based bands such as The Otherside Orchestra and Killeur Calculateur has, in a way, reignited the scene’s love for more upbeat and aggressive music, giving MUZE a better platform by which to reinsert itself back into the slipstream. “A lot of people in our local scene are very driven by trends. There was emo, and now that’s gone a little and in a way, post-rock is starting to fade a little as well. Now it’s the whole ‘British invasion’ thing, but who knows how long that will last,” adds Alang. “Next stop, Malay ‘electro-rok’.”

With an EP in the works (titled A Theme For Murderers) and recent gig stints locally and in Singapore, things are starting to pick up for the band again after a hiatus of two years. Ask any of the band members and they will tell you that they are just glad to be back. “We would love to see a change in people’s negative attitude towards the industry and perhaps an increment in local music appreciation,” states Alang. “In short…less talk, and more rock.”

Band ini secara rasminya ditubuhkan pada awal 2003 oleh yon : yang bermain guitar/vox dan juga che mat : pemain drum(walaupun 2002 menjadikan tahun platform untuk kami..Hehehe).Kemudian sedang kami mencari seseorang yang boleh memetik bass,kami terjumpa makhluk bernama eddy yang ketika itu sedang gundah gulana kerna mengalami selsema kambing(setelah penat bermain skate)..(LOL-joking la this).Kami juga mengelarkan band ini sebagai "MEDIOMAD"setelah mengalami sindrom tak berapa ader selera makan lepas tengok berita..(media + madness = mediomad..Aik..Naper tak jadi medi"a"mad??Larh..Sukahati aku ar..Aku yang isi nama band nie..Korang jgn banyak tanya,"kata yon dengan riak dan takburnya"..Ahahahaha)..Pada masa tu,isu-isu politik menjadi agenda utama dan sedikit melibatkan perasaan hati.Tika sedang semua bergembira dan tertawa,angin lintang datang menjadikan band ini sedikit bergegar dilanda ombak tsunami..Pertukaran line-up berlaku atas sebab-sebab yang munasabah..Pada 2005,yon menubuhkan satu band projek yang dikenali sebagai "Memorial of da' Dead Rose's"(Sebenarnya,nama "memorial of da' dead rose's" itu diambil atas sempena kematian seekor kucing yon yang bernama rose) setelah eddy pencen untuk bekerja di Kuala Lumpur dan begitu jua che' mat..Tempat mereka diganti oleh eipo(lucky munky) sebagai pemain bass dan yoyoe(disfrata) pemain drum(Thanks to u guys for helping me brothers!!i really appreciatte it)..Dalam masa yang sama,rosu(troublesome) dijemput untuk menjadi pemain keyboard yang berkaliber....Tika itu,yon dengan penuh redha meneruskan perjuangan hingga mengalami kejatuhan berat badan yang ketara(hehehehe).Setelah kesekian lamanya..Akhirnya,penghujung tahun 2008 menjadikan che mat kembali semula kejalan yang benar..ini menjadikan mediomad kembali untuk beraksi walau dalam masa yang sama,yon masih lagi dengan band projek beliau..lalalalala..Tapi,eddy masih lagi berusaha keras dengan komitmen beliau..Dengan itu akim menggantikan tempat eddy setelah bertapa di gua masam dekat ulu tembeling selama 2tahun setengah..Akim yang masih menyambung pengajian beliau di N9 amat-amat berdedikasi hingga memaksa beliau pulang ke kuantan hampir setiap minggu untuk berlatih..(Akim RAWKS!!)..kini,line-up band ini bertambah kepada 6 orang..ditambah dengan satu instrumen asas untuk musik ska iaitu "trumpet" dan tempat sebagai peniup trumpet diambil oleh mirol"rasta" dan ditambah lagi dengan seorang tukang karut "rapping" iaitu wan "grunge-core".lalu tempat pemain bass diambil oleh didi yang kacak lagi bergaya..kami akan meneruskan langkah kami dengan bersungguhnya..rawk..hehehe..semoga kami berkekalan..dan,hinggalah kehari ini kami masih lagi menghiburkan manusia(kambing,kucing,arnab,ikan,tikus dan burung pipit..Banyak lagi sebenarnya) dengan bunyi Alternative/Screamo/Hardcore/Punx/Ska(miz "skatecore/bikecore/beercore")."Aku memang suka menjerit",kata yon kepada kawannya itu..

The first single off the second album titled “Yang Pernah” talks about the past and of how things that should have & could have been done. The music video was shot by Singaporean Karen Cai in her homeland and is a performance based video. It involved a lot of mirrors in the shots as Karen wanted to relate to the meaning of the song as mirrors represents reflections of life. This was followed by the second single “Aurora” where it tells the story of the band’s fascination of the night sky or rather the phenomenon. The video was directed by Rewan Ishak, a talented Malaysian which integrated shots of green screen and graphics into the video. The video tells the story of a young man in the year 1959 of his fascination with the aurora. With the help of his scientist friends, he manages to get a glimpse of the aurora as he travels through the parallel universe witnessing the happening of the aurora 50 years in the future. The band members played these characters.....

The music seems to have matured more from the first album “In Hating Memory” but yet, still carrying the “Estranged” sound which combines elements of nu-metal, alternative rock, hard rock, and even grunge. The band pretty much leaves the labelling of their genre to their fans as they never want to limit their sound. Front man Rich says “We’re always looking for a new sound that brings fresh life to the music industry and we never want to be limited when it comes to making music.” ....

Back to Jan 2008, the band had recently won the biggest music award in Malaysia titled Anugerah Juara Lagu (Best song award), and from then on, the band started getting a lot of attention which also opened up the mainstream listeners to other independent bands. Estranged won the award with their biggest hit to date “Itu Kamu”, but the guys knew they had to move on as they didn’t want to be known for just one song. Vocalist Rich, rhythm guitarist Din Hormatov, lead guitarist Nor Hanafi, drummer Azwin Andy and with the help of Ken Chung on bass (the band is still currently looking for a permanent bass player) got into the studios in Feb 2008 and completed the recording sessions in about 4 months. Thus, Remain Unknown was made.....

In October 2008, Estranged released their sophomore album titled “Remain Unknown”. This album consists of 8 English tracks and 5 tracks in Malay. It features hits such as “Yang Pernah”, “Aurora”, “In No Time”, “The Slave in us” and many more. This time around, the band decided to go a little more deep in the sense that the music was inspired by the problems in life that one would go through as a Malaysian, as a person, as a citizen of the world with such problems like the environment, the political situation in Malaysia, the social issues such as child kidnappings that shook the entire nation. The album kicks off with a build up guitars for the song “This world” which was inspired by the wreckage of nature happening around the world, followed by the energetic “Yang Pernah”. The ever so melodic tunes of the band continues with “Masa” and quickly changed into a heavy headbanging riff on “In No Time” which always never fails to keep the crowd moving during the band’s live sets. A good example of description of the songs would be the concept of the album cover. The band decided to go with a more meaningful image where the front cover pictures an “orang asli“ (native man) standing before his village where it is currently beneath water due to discrimination and ignorance. The tribesmen were robbed of their land as there was a need for building of a dam. Due to the construction, the government had to reposition them to higher grounds and putting them into modern day houses, where the natives still find it difficult to adapt. Such fact remains unknown to the masses.....

Adding major festivals such as Soundrenaline (Indonesia) and Sunburst (Malaysia) in their gig list, you can expect the band to explore further into other countries in the coming years. Having impressed many with their direction, music videos and also live performances, the band has got a goal to promote and improve the Malaysian music industry with the intention to be one of Malaysia’s finest rock acts.....

The Rhaman ditubuhkan pada awal tahun 2005. Secara asasnya, mereka terdiri 4 individu yang berkongsi minat pada muzik dan dunia mistik. Kesan daripada keinginan untuk bereksperimen dengan dengan gaya muzik tempatan, Hafidz dan Ewin telah mempelawa Hayan dan Adik bagi melengkapkan pemposisian instrumentasi pada pra-band mereka. Rentetan daripada itu maka bermulalah The Rhaman dengan Hafidz pada mikrofon dan gitar, Adik pada gitar, Hayan memainkan gitar bass secara dinamik bersama pukulan deram Ewin. Kemudiannya dituruti oleh penyertaan Abong pada sesi rakaman dan disusuli oleh Yuyun setahun kemudian.

Dengan berbekalkan inspirasi daripada bunyian 60an dan langgam tempatan beserta mood nyanyian emosional generasi bundle era 90an, The Rhaman mengaplikasikan sebaik mungkin pengamatan instrumen musikal dalam menghasilkan muzik gubahan mereka. Dan kini, The Rhaman terdiri daripada Hafidz, diposisi gitar irama, Adik, diposisi gitar utama, Hayan sebagai pemain gitar bass, Ewin sebagai pemain deram, Abong di posisi keyboard dan Yuyun di bahagian nyanyian.

Dalam arena muzik tempatan yang agak keliru dengan serbuan band-band asing dari seberang telah sedikit sebanyak membuka mata mereka untuk mengambil inisiatif bagi berkarya dengan menggunakan Bahasa Melayu sebagai medium perantaraan di antara mereka, muzik binaan mereka, dan juga ANDA.

The Rhaman was established in 2005. Initially they were 4 individuals who shared interest in music and the mystic world. With the desire to experiment with the local music style, Hafidz and Ewin invited Hayan and Adik to complete the lineup in their pre band setup. This lead to the start of The Rhaman with Hafidz on vocals and rhythm guitar, Adik on lead guitar, Hayan with his dynamic bass playing, and Ewin on the drums. In their recordings, they had Abong playing the keyboard and Yuyun on vocals.

Inspired by the 60s sound, local music and the vocal mood of the ever 90's emotional bundle generation, The Rhaman applied these characteristic in their composition.

In the opinion that the local music circuitry is overflowing with overseas influences, this had opened their eyes to take the initiative to use Bahasa Melayu to interact between The Rhaman, their music and YOU.

The A.C.A.B

THE A.C.A.B. was originally formed as a Street Rock band, A.C.A.B. ('94-'03) back in 1994. The founding members were Max Hafiz (Megat Hafiz) & Edy J Herwan, both KL City based lads played in the same previous band before. Hardy Sham, Black & Anas later joined and A.C.A.B. started gigging across almost each & every states in Malaysia right after releasing a self-titled demo in '95. A.C.A.B. then recorded an EP, followed by 3 albums with 2 Live albums and also few singles, another EP, compilations & tribute albums with several line up changes occurred during the whole process. Zul, Botak & Irfan were among others who also played with A.C.A.B. on various recordings & gigs/concerts. A.C.A.B. latter enjoyed the recognitions of being the Godfather of Eastern Oi!/Street Rock & inspired the birth of Ska music in Malaysia.

A.C.A.B. played the very last gig in '03 & while Max (also formerly known as Magskin) had to leave the country, other former band members were & still are enjoying quite successful musical careers with their own bands respectively such as Edy J with Gerhana Ska Cinta & Irfan with The Times. A.C.A.B. released the very last album in '04 which was recorded in '03 & a 'Tribute to A.C.A.B.' album was then recorded by various bands in '04 & it marked the end of an era of the 'Absolute Chaotic Asian Band' and it sparked a revival of the Eastern Oi!/Street Rock movement from the new generation.

After being an absentee for 2 years, Max has decided to have another go at it. Accompanied by former band members, Edy J & Irfan with the newly appointed Mono, THE A.C.A.B. is born. It's 'THE' A.C.A.B., or pronounced as D' A.C.A.B. (English anyone?). But this time it's a different agenda altogether. Blistering new sounds of Indie Rock with no limitations or boundaries whatsoever. The whole idea of it is simply for the freedom of expressions & to offer an alternative to the Malaysian music industry specifically & to introduce THE A.C.A.B.'s mixture of Asian & western melodies on independent rock music to the rest of the world, generally.

A Kuala Lumpur based Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae & Dub band, Gerhana Skacinta (GSC/Gerhana) emerged from the ska revival scene of Malaysia in the late 1990s. While third-wave ska bred new faces and new categories; ska-punk, ska-pop, ska-core, Gerhana Skacinta stayed the traditional path, remaining faithful to a kind of rootsy purity based on a determination that some music is timeless.

Formed by ska enthusiast, Edy J Herwan, the very first line up are; Rejab + Trombone, Widy + Main Vocal, Bakri + Drum, Jalud + E-Bass & Upright Bass, Didi + Guitar, Fairus + Piano & Organ and Edy himself on Trumpet & Vocal.

Gerhana Skacinta was Edy's spontaneous idea who hardly thinking for the name of his blue beat band. The idea was to have a classic sound for it. First gig they played was Ska Clinic held at the Artist Club, Jalan Ampang. Offered about a week before the gig and knowing that the time was running out, Edy contacted few friends desperately to get the full line up.

The first line-up of Gerhana Skacinta included Bijan + Keyboard, Acong + bass, Rudy + Drum and Chiwok + 2nd Trombone plus the rest that have been mentioned above. About half a year later, Rudy and Bijan leave the band to further studies. Their position was replaced by Olie, the ex-member of Republic of Brickfields, Carburator Dung and Silent Death. It is an honour for Edy to have Olie in his band since he is one of the pioneer musician in Malaysian underground music scene. Soon as he joined the band, Olie introduced Edy to a young and talented Fairus who is a free lance musician graduated from ITM and currently work in MPPJ, to replaced Bijan.Then, Pian who is a friend to Edy joined Gerhana Skacinta casually to fulfill the bands need as a percussionist.

Within a short period of time, Gerhana Skacinta built their own empire and countless fans demanding them to record an album. They have been offered by some major & international record labels, to sign a contract.However, Edy's strategy was to participated in gigs as much as possible in order to build his own empire of followers, besides to improve their skills in performing lives.

In early 2001, 'Tang' of Clockwork Records offered Gerhana Skacinta to record a compilation album Tribute to Sweet Charity, with other established band such as Koffin Kanser, Flop Poppy, Butterfingers and others. Edy accepted the challenge thinking that, the time has come and this could be one of a way to maximise the promotion for the band, importantly the music to the local industry and to the wider scope. They covered the song Jangan Tunggu Lama Lama, it was a hit and had a big radio air played.

In Mac 2002, Gerhana Skacinta signed up with Clockwork Records and ready to issued their first single album called Skali Skale, after gaining lots of invaluable experience of shows and winning uncountable crowds. Recorded in Synchrosound Studio, their first EP consists 5 tracks on the record. However, it was an unforgotten moment and a hard time for them since the recording process was delayed when Edy & Widy's mother and Olie's father past away a month before.

Olie, Acong ,Pian and Ciwok left Gerhana Skacinta for some reason in mid 2002. Drum position was replaced by Bakri, an experienced musician who played with few bands with big names such as OAG, Flop Poppy, Koffin Kanser and Republic of Brickfields. Instead of having 2 trombones, the band remained with one powerful blower, Rejab. Lucky Edy to have him as the member of the band who's also Edy's informal trumpet teacher. Rejab work professionally as a musician at Petronas. Later on, came in rare Jalud, a friend of Fairus + a freelance musician. Jalud gives Edy a maximum satisfaction for being able to play the Up-right bass, which what Edy really wants from the very beginning he formed his band.

In the late 2002, Gerhana Skacinta came out with their full length album confidently with the new powerful line up. Boss Sounds 11 track was a skilled refinement of Gerhana Skacinta's formidable talents and appeal. As the band hones its blend of smooth Caribbean melodies and the bluebeat and rocksteady sounds pioneered by the Skatalites, Lord Kithcner and The Wailers in Kingston, Gerhana Skacinta confidently finds its own unmistakable traits, rediscovering pre-ska influences of 1950s' soul, R&B and jazz. Klue magazine placed the album on its best-of list in 2003, reviews praised the bands authenticity and class, and the swell of people in the know grew steadily through the bands hard work and dedication.

In September 2004, Gerhana Skacinta released their 2nd full album, The New Authentic, a self produced album that sold over 20,000 copies. With it, the ability of the band came to light when they was nominated for few categories in major award winning ceremonies for AIM ( Anugerah Industri Muzik ) and Anugerah Juara Lagu . The hit single Senyuman Ragamu feat Radhi OAG allowed the band to performed for prestige events and to achieved mainstream commercial success.

Gerhana Skacinta released their 3rd full album called This Is Ska in 2007. After an elaborate tour to promote the album and sorting through band tensions, the band decided to take a break. Sunburst KL 2008 was their last performance for that year. During the break, Edy concentrated on his 'dirty reggae' band, The Aggrobeats and made a deal with Copasetic Records Germany to released a 45 vinyl, contributed a song in United Colours of SKA 4.0 released by Porkpie Records Germany, both sold in Europe. The Aggrobeats also featured in a compilation album called Boss Sounds Stormers, released by Rudeness Records Japan.

After a year break, the band is back with both original and new line-ups and currently auditioning for new female singer. They are scheduled to release 2 new singles in March / April 2009.

Special Note : When most people are not familiar to the sound of ska, the truth is, it's the skinheads and the mods who brought Gerhana Skacinta to its place now. These people supported them with no doubts from the very beginning of their journey, and at the very first gig. Bunch of friends, hanging around for quite some time decided to form a band.

Formed in 2005, PESAWAT consists of Nizam Camel, Mann, Kudux and Jipie. Their music, which comes both in Malay and English, crafted with the influenced of Brit rock and a mixture of their own. “PESAWAT” which means aircraft, described their music as fast and loud. Their music sounds distinctive from the rest injected with energy, progressive and catchy tunes.

Dubbed as “Discovery of 2008” by MalayMail (Malaysia’s Top English Tabloid), PESAWAT has set the sky as their limit. Voted to play at KLUE Urbanscapes 2008 (the biggest art+music festival), PESAWAT has created a buzz handing more shows for them hereafter. Other notable shows includes HotFM Twisties Bingit Finale, Zoom in @ RTM, Converse Century Project, Konsert Kemanusiaan GAZA, Crossborders, Indie Youth Fest 2008 in conjuction with Electronic Sports World Cup 2008, XFM XGig Series, FlyFM Campurtchart Goes Live and Latte@8 (aired via 8TV). PESAWAT also was invited by Channel [V] as the guest artist to perform with Nidji for Channel [V] Amp Live Nidji showcase in KL in conjunction with the launch of the TV series Heroes Season 3. The showcase has led PESAWAT to be featured in Channel [V] AMP Around Asia, a ‘Rockumentary’ about Asian bands that was aired on Channel [V]. Other than that, PESAWAT was invited to play at HOTFM BiG JAM (the biggest concert ever participated by 30 Top Malaysian Artiste) in conjunction of HOTFM 3rd Anniversary. They have also involved in marking a history with XFM by playing live on air for XFM X-GiG Xtended featuring 30 top Indie acts. PESAWAT also have played at Sunburst KL 2009 alongside international acts like KORN and N.E.R.D. In conjunction of American Idol Finale Promo, PESAWAT was invited to perform to celebrate winners to watch American Idol Finale which was brought by Star TV.

Most recently, on the 26th of May 2009, PESAWAT has marked another achievement by launching their first music video on a real aircraft. The launching was brought by Channel [V] supported by Malaysia Airlines, Malaysia Airport Berhad and Astro. The launch was held on a Boeing 777. Apart from that, PESAWAT is nominated in the “Break Out (Best new Act)” category in the Shout Awards 2009 which will be aired live on 8TV this 17th July 2009.

With Mirage music video going to be aired sometime soon, PESAWAT has released another Malay track as their second single and an English track to follow suit as their third single. The songs are Rasional Emosional and Excuse Me. Currently PESAWAT is working on a full-length debut album and is due to be released in the second quarter of 2009.

PESAWAT first single, a Malay track entitled “Mirage” was released last October 2008. It has brought them to another level by championing local charts and captivating listeners’ heart. Mirage has reached the number 1 spot in HOTFM30 chart, XFM10 Chart, and FLYFM CampurChart. The song also occupied top 3 spot for other charts like SuriaFM30, EraFM prebiu and KLFM Top10. Mirage is currently having heavy rotation on local and foreign radio mainly XFM (103.0FM), Ria Singapura (89.7FM), HotFM (97.6FM) FlyFM (95.8FM), EraFM (103.3), KLFM (97.2) and SURIAFM (105.3) to name a few. Most recently, PESAWAT shift up the gear by releasing two new singles simultaneously which is currently now on the radio playlist. What started as casual jamming sessions among four secondary school friends ended up in the formation a band, Bunkface. Three years on and they're now widely known as a rising star in the local music scene. Although the band was formed in 2005, it was only in late 2006 when they caught the attention of the public through their participation in the hit TV show Blastoff. The year 2006 proved to be an exciting one for Bunkface. One of the highlights of their experience as fresh young musicians happened in March 2006 when Bunkface won first place for the Battle of the Bands competition in UNISEL organized by ROTTW. Winning the competition opened a door for Bunkface to be featured in a magazine for the very first time. Another sweet success came later that year when Bunkface snatched first place for the Battle of the Bands competition in Universiti Malaya. With that accomplishment, Demoplanet.tv approached Bunkface and offered to sponsor a video clip for the song Hyper Killer. After garnering a truckload of new experiences, Bunkface began writing more and more new songs. In December 2007, Bunkface released their first EP titled “Lesson of the Season” featuring 6 English tracks with a taste of pop-punk and alternative rock. Fast forward to the present, Bunkface have been featured in ROTTW and interviewed on air numerous times on XFresh FM and Fly FM. They were also interviewed and featured on Era Sentral and The Wknd Sessions. Their first hit song Silly Lily was number 1 on Hitz.fm’s Malaysian Top Ten for 8 weeks and number 1 on Fly.fm’s Campur Chart for 10 weeks. Bunkface’s current hit and first Malay single Situasi has stormed to number 1 on XFresh FM and steadily stayed at number 3 on Era FM for 3 weeks. The band has performed at high school proms, charity events, product launchings, dinner galas, and gigs covering venues all around the Klang Valley, Malacca, Perak, Penang, Johor, Sarawak and Singapore. Bunkface was the opening band for Fly FM 3rd Anniversary showcase, and their very first large scale gig proved to be a success. the story behind it...
I did not know what I was getting myself into when I was offered the role of lead vocalist for The OtherSide Orchestra. At the time (around October 2007), the band was already fast becoming the crowd’s favourite at various local independent music events.
I was worried, nervous…scared, even, to accept the offer. Why? I’ve seen them play live before and I know for a fact that this band is favoured by many for their energetic, animated and excellent musicianship on and off stage. They make the crowd go crazy. In other words, ‘they always bring the house down’.
They even have their own lighting technician to create a signature mood everytime they perform a show! They’ve been going on strong without a lead vocalist, (though Wan, currently on lead guitar, did sing a few songs sometimes) so I wondered whether their fans would accept my presence in the band.
I gave it a shot anyway and after 2 jamming sessions, I finally felt the magic this band produce when they make music together. I was ecstatic.
So we had our first gig as the ‘complete’ The OtherSide Orchestra at Laundry Bar, The Curve on November 5, 2007. The show went very well and I could totally let myself go on stage. Performing with the band that night was stellar. We had more shows that week and I realized later that in this band, everyone automatically makes each other feel like a star on stage. It is the positive energy and the one thing that we strive to do each time we perform - to really have a good time.
We recently launched our album, ‘Electromancetacy’ at The Annexe, Central Market on December 2, 2007. The turnout was so overwhelming (maybe about 500 people or more in total) that we had to limit the number of people to 200 going into the hall at one time.
The launch was supported by Junk Magazine and we even had an independent fashion boutique, ‘Previous’ to sponsor us clothes that night. Independently produced, the album has sold more than 700 copies to date. It is available not only in Kuala Lumpur but also in other states in Malaysia as well as Singapore.
There was a couple of changes in the band’s line-up since its formation in early 2007, but we managed to pull through and now we’re standing stronger than ever. With positive feedbacks from fans (more than 38,000 hits on myspace and still counting), friends and especially the media, the band strives to become one of the dominant names in the music scene, both local and hopefully, international.
I believe I speak for my band when I say we enjoy making music and we are consistently writing new materials to challenge our musical abilities. We experiment and never limit ourselves to any particular sound, all in all what you get is an experimentation of danceable rock & roll, infused with a lot of soul (from all 7 of us!).
I am not writing this to boast about my own band, but I am writing as a person who used to admire this band’s musicality long before I became a part of them. They made me want to sing. They made me want to lose myself with their brand of music. And that is exactly what The OtherSide Orchestra will do to you too. So hop on and enjoy the ride.

OAG, also spelled O@G, also known as Old Automatic Garbage or Orang Asia Genius,^[1] are a Malaysian p op and alternative rock band. The band, formed in 1992, was one of the first English language alternative rock bands in Malaysia to get huge attention from mainstream music listeners. The current line-up of the band are Radhi (vocals and guitar), Azeezul Fitri (drums), Haifizul Azim (guitar), Muhamad Nizam (guitar), and Eric Wong (bass guitar).

History

The original line-up of the band were Radhi, Chi (drums), Ivan (guitar), and Lam (bass guitar). Their big break came when they recorded a demo tape and sent it to Paul Moss, the producer from Positive Tone. Paul was impressed with the tape and signed the band up under Positive Tone. Gradually they band picked up a respectable number of fans in the country. They went on to win the Best New Artist category in the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) (Malaysian Music Awards) in 1996 and their first videoclip, 60's TV, was also nominated for the Best Video Clip category.^[2]

Around the year 2000, OAG began making music in the Malay language. In July 2007, OAG won the group category in the IKON Malaysia contest, the contest which features established artists in Malaysia. The band, together with Jaclyn Victor the winner of the solo category, went on to represent Malaysia in the regional IKON ASEAN in August 2007, where they did not win.^[3]

The band is well known for breaking the mainstream music ideology of malay rock and pop and pushing the alternative genre and underground spirit into commercial media such as radio and television. The 60's tv videoclip was a landmark success in a new direction of music video for the country, and becomes one of the most recognizable songs ever in indie/underground circuits (next to Butterfingers' Nicotine and Vio-Pipe).

Although the band's recognition would bring fourth numerous newer bands into the spotlight, the music industry has changed little and no improvement has been deemed worthy of the countries name (either through musical breakthrough, videography or achievement awards).

N THE local independent music scene, he is already considered a legend. He has been around since the indie scene’s infancy in the 80s. People started to take notice of him (with flowing Rasta locks and all) and his metal outfit, Koffin Kanser, in the 90s. Besides fronting Koffin Kanser during live performances, he also fronted another band – the reggae covers band, Republic of Brickfields.

He is none other than Aru.

And now, after making five Koffin Kanser records in a span of 10 years, Aru has finally released the long-awaited Republic of Brickfields’ debut album, Ganjaran. Not only that, the band have been on a nationwide tour to promote the album. Aru hopes that the local live scene will be re-ignited by bands that tour.

“This is what all bands should be doing – releasing an album and going on tour,” said Aru in an interview recently. “It’s good if bands can do this (go on tour). I want other bands to follow this trend. If you have a dream (of being in a band), then you have to experience touring.”

Aru states that being on the road and performing live outside a band’s base gives them hands-on knowledge of what it takes to be on the road and serves to improve their playing.

“The only way we are going to match overseas bands is by going on the road and playing live. Only then will you know what is it like to deal with a crew and all the ups-and-downs of organising shows, and only then will you grow in terms of your music and as a person.”

Another reason Aru is advocating touring is to re-ignite the live scene locally which will also make it more accessible for local bands to tour and have shows.

“I want to popularise the live scene and I hope that it will grow. I want the new generation of local musicians to enjoy what us otai (old-timers) have done. I want to do good for the local music scene.”

The Republic of Brickfields’ history is interesting. For one, the name was coined by former member and local indie scene stalwart Joe Kidd as a collective of poets, songwriters, artistes and musicians living in, well, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

“Joe came up with the name and it was to represent, originally, a group of young boys (including myself), all out-of-towners who had come to the big city, KL, to earn a living. And that included a diverse group of creative people – musicians, artistes, poets and the like. It was from that circle that we put together this reggae covers band,” recalled Aru, who hails from Alor Star.

As such, the Republic has seen its fair share of different line-ups over the years; the only constant member in the band is Aru. Interestingly, the Republic is one of the few local indie bands to have lasted so long and still remain well known, largely thanks to Aru and Koffin Kanser.

“Whenever Koffin Kanser plays a show, I automatically get asked if Republic of Brickfields is interested in playing as well. So whenever Koffin Kanser plays, Republic of Brickfields shares the bill, too,” said Aru.

This has helped keep the Republic of Brickfields name alive but, without an album, fans never really knew what the Republic was about, other than being a reggae covers band.

“I always get asked about the Republic and what we’re about but without an album, a product, it was hard to get people interested in the band and their music. I’ve been a reggae fan ever since I was seven. With the Republic, I got the chance to play the music I’ve always loved, in the hopes that the kids get into it as well. But, more often than not, we get the same requests every time we play – Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry. Even in the Marley catalogue, the kids only know a few of his songs; they associate reggae with Marley but there are so many reggae bands out there. I’m trying to get them to listen to as much reggae music as possible.”

Not that Aru has a problem playing No Woman, No Cry over and over again. He states that among the many genres of music in the local indie scene, reggae is the one that unites all these divisions .

“There are metal-heads and punk aficionados and they’re very loyal to their music and bands that they support. Reggae, however, is the only form of music that brings all these kids together,” said Aru.

And it is the kids that drive Aru to keep doing what he does.

“I want to have a positive impact on the kids. I’ve been in the scene for so long, and it’s a good thing to see these kids playing their own reggae songs now. Reggae is definitely coming up in the underground scene. I know that it is always associated with drugs but that’s the wrong perception. People look at me and my hair and because I play reggae, they think, ‘Yeah, he smokes marijuana’, but I’ve stopped smoking cigarettes for seven years now.

“What’s important is the music, not the lifestyle. I want to reach out to the kids through reggae because nobody listens and talks to the kids these days.”

In The Aggrobeat's own definition, they took the term and apply it into their music ; an aggressive music with an aggressive attitude on stage. The Aggrobeats are the ‘Boss Reggae’ band of Malaysia. Having the similarities with their super duper Californian heroes, The Aggrolites; The Aggrobeats are extremely inspired by them, but, musically, both are looking up to the same pioneer from the hard-screaming edge of James Brown to The Meters to the really authentic 60’s skinhead reggae in the mix. The band crystallized their musical ideals for the genre by cutting down the ska beat and mixed with funk and soul into it.

With a simple catchy sing-a-long melody & a soulful vocals, fuelled with life lyrical content; guitar-works, screaming hammond organ & the 60’s style live studio recording sound are their priority. The band played their first gig at The Brandals ( an Indonesian Rock & Roll band ) tour in Kuala Lumpur. Few months after, they recorded a DIY demo ‘The Good, The Bad and The Reggae’, which resulted in the released of their own brand 7” vinyl, distributed by Copasetic / Scorcha Records, Germany.

Up to this hour, they still continue the old-skool self promo strategy, perform at gigs and music events. Based in Kuala Lumpur, the band consisting Edy J. Harmacy,a band from ipoh started their own step in local indie scene early years of 2000.The line-up that time consists MUNEY as the band leader and guitar/vocal,LEY the lead guitar,BOY as the bassist and AYIQ the drummer..All of them have same interest in making music.They started play cover songs from DINOSAUR JR,SONIC YOUTH,ERIC'S TRIP,THE PIXIES,SEBADOH and MOTORPSYCHO which there were their major influence.Mostly,they play more to US indie-rock and added some noise in their music..

In 2003,2 years later,their recorded a song called "its all over now" and put it in the KOPI SECHEWEN vol 3 compilation.That compilation was produced by BODYSURF MUSIC..A few months later,after the compilation has been release,they played the launch party and it was a great show and they started get known by the people..

A year later,in 2004,they recorded their 1st EP called "HERE TO HERE" and launched at the INDIE ALL OUT 2 gig.The songs recorded at TRINITY STUDIO,IPOH which consist 7 track.This EP attracted media to give positive feedback which from R.O.T.TW,MALAY MAIL,BERITA HARIAN and also from JOE KIDD..

On 2004,BOY quit from the band and the position subtituted by ALAK.In this year,they put their song in the RADIO MALAYA COMPILATION.The song called "MAKES ME FEEL".Other than that,Umbrella Records like to produce a compilation called COME TOGETHER COMPILATION and Harmacy put "Only One" song in this compilation.

On 2006,they recorded the new single.The single named MILLION REASONS which consists 4 tracks,recorded at Standing Wave,KL.However,they never stop here.It will be more song and upcoming album released soon.

A Brief History

Laila’s Lounge is a musical group currently based in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Originally formed by Hadi [Vocals/Lyricist], Bai [Guitar], Icham [Guitar] they were later joined by Bulat [Bassist], Sham Daging [Drummer] & Ajeep [Keyboards].

They played numerous shows in the late 90s, captivating audience with their musical textures and sonic-like soundscapes garnering positive reviews from the general gig going community in the process at that time.

But due to a number of personal issues, (including Sham Daging deteriorating mental health) they were sent to nowhere land causing Sham Daging to be replaced by Just as the drummer.After Bulat and Just left the band, they were replaced by Anaz [Bassist] and David (ex-Polythene, now with They Will Kill Us All) joined the band on 2nd Guitar with Icham switching to drums.

Later, after several frustrating chain of events, Hadi quit on the band and moved to KL where he joined a local theatre group called Sanggar Karya. Bai, the most influential member then followed Hadi’s suit leaving the band on the verge of an impending breakup.

It was not until end of 2004, that Anaz’s passion and determination managed to persuade Bai and Icham to rethink about continuing their musical journey and reform the band. Toya [Guitar] now already part of the band and together they worked on new materials until they were later reunited with Hadi.

Now, after stints including opening for Jens Lekman in KL and playing at numerous venues in JB, KL and Singapore, they’re hoping that you’re coming along with them to the future of Laila’s Lounge.

In 1991, Loque and his Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) schoolmate, Kadak formed what was then known as Loque's Tail , Loque and Kadak, together with a few MCKK friends, started producing their own material, with the hopes of making a name for themselves in the Malaysian music scene. It is worth remembering that this was during the start of the grunge era which managed to reach the shores of Malaysia in substantial force.

It was while jamming in Kuala Lumpur during 1993 at Black Widow Studios that they bumped into Emmett, who was there jamming (as a guitarist) with his band at that time, Grunge Dayz . Impressed with what he saw, Loque challenged Emmett to a ‘jamming showdown', after which they mutually decided to join skills and creativity, to form their own band. After meeting up with drummer Kalai later that year, Butterfingers was officially born by the end of 1993. And with the final line up of Loque (songwriter, guitarist), Emmett (vocals, guitar, strings and lyricist), Kadak (bass) and Kalai (drums), Butterfingers hit the underground gig scene with such vengeance that had most of their shows sold out and described today as ‘the stuff of underground legends'.

Rise To Fame (1996-1999)

1.2 mg was released in 1996 to a reasonably strong and rapidly growing fanbase, (owing to the massive reputation the band had achieved during their years in the underground scene) with Nirvana-esque tunes, much like Silverchair was with their early albums. The band was evidently very much influenced by the Seattle scene which at that time was dying away after the death of Kurt Cobain, and the evolution of Pearl Jam into a more melodic, diverse and less angst-ridden band, among other things. The Malaysian youth however, were far from over with grunge and received 1.2 mg very well. The following year's release of their second album Butter Worth Pushful strengthened their following with more intricate, but still grungy, tunes.

It was however, the 1999 album Transcendence, which showcased massive songwriting potential, that brought Butterfingers to the peak of their popularity. With hit songs The Chemistry (Between Us) and Epitome, Transcendence sold over 50 000 units, which was an admirable feat for an English-singing Malaysian band at a time when such bands were still by and large almost automatically considered inferior to American and British imports.

Maturity and Integrity (2000-present)

After the success of Transcendence and the release of Butter Late Than Never, a collection of old live tracks and outtakes with some previously unreleased songs, Butterfingers recorded Malayneum, an epic album showcasing some of the most impressive material in Malaysian music history that won rave reviews from critics. In many ways, it fulfilled the potential that was evident in Transcendence and acts as a testament of how mature the band had become at that point. The fans however, responded less favourably, evident by decreased sales of the album, hugely due the fact that they were still in desire for three-chord, angst-ridden, grungy material. This was something the band wasn't willing to continue producing at the expense of musical growth and maturity. The band once remarked how they felt that while they have grown past grunge strictly as a musical genre, the fans have not. Nonetheless Malayneum is a landmark album for the Malaysian music scene simply because of its quality and originality. After a greatest hits album in early 2003, the band started working on the Malay language album Selamat Tinggal Dunia which was released in 2004. By this time many Malaysian bands singing in Malay were selling very well, owing much to the popularity of Indonesian indie bands in the country. In fact some bands who previously sang in English, such as OAG, perhaps realising the commercial potential, switched to Malay. Rock music in Malaysia was also under significant challenge from the hiphop scene with the emergence of groups such as Too Phat and Teh Tarik Crew who attained huge commercial success and popularity among the youth of the country. Some sections of the Butterfingers' fanbase were slightly suspicious of the band's motives for recording a Malay album but once again they were defiant and demonstrated faith in their own visions of what they intended to produced.

Selamat Tinggal Dunia proved to be surprisingly original and any concerns of Butterfingers 'selling out' were put to rest with its release. The album brought a new dimension to Malay rock with a mixture of controlled raw-ness and mature musical arrangements which was never meant to sell as well as the Malay or Indonesian bands that sang easy listening ballads which some critics have claimed to be lacking in depth. Even the words Emmett used on the album were 'alien', borrowing many terms associated with the Malaysian royalty. In interviews the band have said that this was a conscious move on their part to explore new grounds within Malay language music which they felt was becoming all too predictable.

Emmett left for Canada to further his education before the release of Selamat Tinggal Dunia and there were rumours of Butterfingers breaking up or melting away (helped by the title of the record itself which can be directly translated as Goodbye World) but the band themselves have maintained that there is no real cause for such fears as they plan to continue working together as often and as best as they can. No matter the future outcome for Butterfingers, they have ridden the unique challenges as artists in Malaysia and most definitely stamped their mark as Malaysian music legends. Whlie they were on hiatus, Loque continued his study in Boston, America. Loque had written several songs before and after he went for his studies. Most of these songs have been released as singles under the moniker Monoloque. The rest of the Butterfingers family played small, unplugged shows for their fans but with ex-Butterfingers, Azmir on the drums.

Butterfingers is currently in midst of releasing their second malay album titled 'Kembali' which is expected to be released on 06.07.08.

Long Rest for 2009

After the released of "KEMBALI" album on August 2008, Butterfingers made several shows to promote their newest album. On 17th and 18th January 2009, they performed for the first and the last time for 2009 at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur that consist of 4 sessions for 2 days. Tickets to all 4 sessions were sold out before the shows and it was a huge success to the band, and a good time to say farewell to their fans as Loque will be going back to Boston. Rumours of the band resting out for a long time spread out from the fans that saying Butterfingers will be back in 2011.

With band members consisting of seasoned players in the so-called scene, They Will Kill Us All (TWKUA) were born out of the frustration due to the failures of their past bands. Formed at the end tail end of 2003, TWKUA started off as a musical project spearheaded by guitarists David and Eddie celebrating their enthusiasm for indie rock music. After working on the music, the duo felt the need for a vocalist, and Hafizul took to the stand. The trio began writing songs and started scouting for permanent members. After a couple of lineup changes, the trio finally decided to rope in longtime acquaintances Amir on bass and Ihsan on drums. Their debut performances were on live TV (Latte@8) and the performance netted them the opening slot for Pop Shuvit at the K.L.H.C Revival gig at Hard Rock Café. The band has since played various shows around Kuala Lumpur and a gig in Singapore championing their brand of noise pop.

Often described as an exciting blend of British indie and US post-hardcore music, TWKUA has already been receiving rave reviews due to their live performances and tight musicianship. However being aware of the fragile and false nature of adoration, they are more tightly focused on delivering what matters most the music. While along the way enjoying the camaderie of a band, TWKUA is also determined more then ever to make great music that stands the test of time. Currently in pre-production for their upcoming release due by the end of the year, TWKUA are still experimenting with their sound and music but for now they are just enjoying what they do best and having fun at doing what they like.

Estrella originally formed as a trio back in 2006, then shrunk to a duo, armed with their guitars and heartfelt tunes. Singer/guitarist Liyana and lead guitarist Yob began circulating the local music scene with their own brand of acoustic music. Numerous open-mic sessions and gigs at notable shows around town namely Moonshine, Troubadours, Doppelganger, and No Black Tie followed suit, before ultimately capturing the attention of indie label Laguna Music.

After teaming up with Laguna Music in January 2007, Estrella further evolved their genre from indie jazz to a slightly more complex sound, with dreamy and spacey after-effects. Having worked their way to perfecting their existing and new material, Estrella’s self-titled album was released on the 28th of December 2007. Simultaneously, Estrella’s singles, ‘Ternyata’ & ‘Stay’, were released to reach-out to both the Malay & English markets.

In March 2008, Estrella’s first video release for their Malay single ‘Ternyata’ was featured on German based Mercedes-Benz’s Mixed Tape Online Music Magazine [www.mercedes-benz.tv/mixedtape] after being chosen to be one of the 6 bands worldwide that are featured monthly. Being the first Asian band featured on this online music magazine, it had brought international recognition to the band. This was swiftly followed by a popular Spanish radio station requesting to air Estrella’s songs as well as a feature in Germany’s popular travel guide book ‘Marco Polo – Malaysia’.

Meanwhile, ‘Stay’ picked up momentum on popular Malaysian radio stations, Fly FM and Hitz.FM. Topping the charts on both stations, peaking at 1 on Hitz.fm’s Malaysian English Top 10 for 5 weeks and 1 on Fly Fm’s Campur Chart for 3 weeks, earning them heavy rotation on both stations. Performance wise, the band gained much needed experience by playing alongside some of the best acts in the country for shows like the KAMI tour, Rock the World 8, and the Roxy Summer Splash to name a few.

Sadly in August 2008, founding member Yob had to leave the band due to personal work commitments, but the band carried on with their plans. After much hard work, in December 2008, Estrella were rewarded with a whooping 8 nominations for the inaugural Voize Independent Music Awards [VIMA], which were held in January 2009, winning 3 Gold awards & 1 Silver award, which includes the Best Pop Group, Best Pop Song & Best Female Vocalist [Overall] awards, automatically earning them 4 nominations in the first Asian VIMA which will be held in March 2009.

Starting 2009 on a high, ‘Ternyata’ was once again featured on the Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape Online Music Magazine, which attracts over 70,000 viewers a month, in the BEST OF MIXED TAPE 2008 edition. Estrella are due to release their third single ‘Take It Slow’ in February 2009. With an Indonesian & UK tour currently in the works, the year looks to be very promising.

Everyday musings and inward thoughts are the main elements in their music, using simplicity as the main staple. Estrella is simply going with the flow, and taking in stride whatever it is that comes their way, so keep your ears peeled for this act, they’re soon bound to reach and capture the hearts of music-enthusiasts worldwide.

Pop Shuvit began making waves in the local music scene in late 2001. Comprising of Moots (vocals), JD (guitars), AJ (bass), Rudy (drums) and UNO (turntables), the band has had 4 successful releases under their belt and rocked fans throughout Asia notably in Japan, Thailand and Singapore. Known for their adrenaline packed live shows and eclectic blend of hip hop and rock, Pop Shuvit are being touted as Asia’s leading Hip Hop Rock band.

Their debut album ‘Take it & Shuvit’ broke new ground when their first single ‘Skaters’ Anthem’ was released exclusively on the Internet and became one of the most downloaded local songs in Malaysian music history. The hype and street buzz from the track caught the ears of ESPN, who in turn licensed the track for use in their Summer X-Games broadcast that hit millions of households worldwide. As further credit to Pop Shuvit, ESPN played their music videos and tracks off the album throughout the duration of competition.

In 2003, Pop Shuvit released “Take it & Shuvit” in Japan and became the first Malaysian band to hit the music chart in Japan. The overwhelming support from Japanese youth market ensured that all tracks of the album charted the top 20 on the Tower Records sales charts (even beating raprock luminaries like Linkin Park) without any promotion to back the album. The success of their releases in Japan led to Pop Shuvit touring the land of the rising sun in 2005 to support their sophomore release, ‘HERE & NOW’, leading to one of the most successful and talked about headlining tours for any Malaysian rock band. The album was a hard-hitting social commentary of urban culture and spurred hits like “Old Skool Rocka” and “Journey”, with the latter earning the band the 1 Song of the year on the Malaysian English Top Ten for 2005 and “Best Rock Act” at the inaugural Hitz.fm Malaysian English Top Ten Awards 2005.

Always one to go against the grain, the band released a dance remix album and a hip hop EP in 2004 and 2006 respectively. The remix of their track ‘Conversations’ from the “Shuvit Remixes” dance CD was hand picked by uber DJ Nick Warren for inclusion in pioneering UK dance music label Global Underground’s mix CD, Shanghai GU28 that peaked at 19 on the UK TOP 40 Dance Album Charts. The hip hop EP, a 4 track 12 inch vinyl release, featured collaborations with some of hip hop’s most respected emcees from around the globe including US emcees Big Pooh from Little Brother, L.E.G.A.C.Y, Cesar Comache, ZION from ZION I, Def Jam Japan’s DABO and Reggaeton duo Nitro Y Fanta from Puerto Rico.

Not resting on their laurels, Pop Shuvit’s eagerly anticipated third album, aptly titled “Amped & Dangerous” hit stores in Japan on 23 August 2006 with a later release date being planned for the Malaysian market. The 12 song set is a rollercoaster ride of crunching guitars, pounding rhythms and funked out hip hop beats and rhymes."This is essentially a guitar driven album that’s made for the mosh pit. Simply put, it rocks harder!” says skinman Rudy about the new material.Malaysian fans can expect something different as Guitarist/Producer JD hinted, “We had to think strategically this time around and only release tracks that cater for a specific market so the Japanese/Asian and Malaysian editions will be different.” The Japanese edition of the album will be released throughout Asia as an import edition so fans will still be able to obtain both copies.To top off a great 2006, Pop Shuvit walked away with the “Best Live Act” at the Annual Malaysian English Top Ten Awards 2006.Being independent, the boys understand that there is a need to diversify and take the band to the next level as frontman Moots! Pointed out, “That’s the essence of Pop Shuvit, we always do things differently and love taking risks. We want to turn Pop Shuvit into a brand name and to do this we need to branch out and spread our wings be it in music or other facets of urban culture.”

True to their word, the boys have done just that by setting up Shuvit Management and Studio 21:05 to undertake the responsibilities of band management, marketing, music publishing and music production. Based in Taman Tun, Kuala Lumpur, Studio 21:05 is a fully equipped professional recording studio owned by Pop Shuvit and run by guitarist JD who is a qualified professional audio engineer. The next step for Pop Shuvit will be the world of fashion where Pop Shuvit have already sold out 3 limited edition T-shirt designs under its “Unknown Clothing” merchandising line and are in the midst of taking its clothing line to retails stores throughout Malaysia, a testament that the band is evolving and building itself into a successful business.

One of the few true blue power pop bands in the region, Couple has been plying its trade for years now, dedicating itself to remind people of the virtues and magic of 'the song', and the power of the pop!! Taking cues from bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Big Star, The Who, The Raspberries, The Beat, The Rooks, Enuff Znuff and Weezer, Couple has kept on doing what they do best and hope to put a smile (and hopefully a headbang or toe-tap or two) on all youse guys' faces. But, making you wet your pants will make us equally happy too!!

Relying solely, and foolishly, on the dodgy songcraft of our dodgy and lame frontman, Aidil, Couple has continued to defy the odds as none of us can play our instruments competently to save our lives, hoping to inspire similarly incompetent kids to just form their own bands and stick it to the Man!! Our live shows are textbook examples of the triumph of substance over style, if you call professional musicianship 'style', that is. Sloppy and loud, with more than a touch of toilet humor in our lame crowd banter (if we're up for it!!), our live shows will never fail to make you wet your pants with laughter and icky stuff. Yes, we're THAT good and THAT bad!!

Bottom line: We're here to serve the muse that is the pop! To pursue that magic in 'the song'. And to give you the sugar rush you need!!

Eight years ago nobody cares who uncle Hussain was. Now everybody wants to Meet Uncle Hussain. Undoubtably one of Malaysia’s top rising acts in the local indie scene, Meet Uncle Hussain consist of Lan on vocals and guitar, Taja on guitar, Afatt on Bass and Kudux on drums.

Meet Uncle Hussain themselves are not new to the indie scene, but had recently hitched a ride on the fame train. Their big break happened when two of their songs were picked up to be featured in a hit teen TV series, K.A.M.I.

Meet Uncle Hussain is one of those bands that sounds good in recording, but sounds even better when performing live. You can see that clearly this band enjoys performing live.

The name ‘Meet Uncle Hussain’ is a peculiar name for a rock band, but they are not your ordinary indie rock band either. Most of their songs they sing in Malay, but this band refuse to be pigeonholed into becoming one of the local malay rock bands who sings sappy rock ballads.

Meet Uncle Hussain is not sappy at all. Listening to their songs, I can say that they draw influences from upbeat bands like Franz Ferdinand to The White Stripes and mellower sounds from bands like Radiohead. Their sounds are advance, radio friendly and very hard to dislike. No wonder the mainstream pick them up very fast.

Each time when asked, who is ‘Uncle Hussian’, the band replied with a different answer. Their answer ranges from an actual uncle that’s very close to the band, or wanting to sound uniquely local, and I’ve even read on a magazine that says it’s a tribute to Malaysia’s third Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn who was granted the soubriquet Bapa Perpaduan (Father of Unity). Whatever it is, the name is catchy and unique which represent the sound of the band.

These are two songs picked up from the K.A.M.I soundtrack that start it all for this band.
